How safe are blood, blood products and stem cell preparations? (SARS-CoV-2)

GYN & PERINATAL ZURICH > How safe are blood, blood products and stem cell preparations? (SARS-CoV-2)

The Paul Ehrlich Institute in Germany has adapted its recommendations for blood and stem cell donation in case of contact with SARS-CoV-2 infected persons. These recommendations thus also apply to SARS-CoV-2 infected women in childbirth and the newborn.

Based on experience with other coronavirus infections (SARS and MERS) and other viruses that lead to respiratory infections, the risk of transfusion-related transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is considered unfounded according to current knowledge. The relevant professional societies in Germany assume that the risk of the newborn being infected with SARS-CoV-2 by the mother is low and the outcome is usually favourable.
