Natural birth or planned caesarean section?

GYN & PERINATAL ZURICH > Natural birth or planned caesarean section?

Doctors often recommend surgery to mature women instead of natural childbirth.

I do not agree with this. I am not against natural childbirth for mature pregnant women, even if many doctors consider it too risky. If there are no medical contraindications, a woman is free to choose the way she wants to deliver. We discuss all the pros and cons, but it is the patient who makes the decision.

The situation is different if the expectant mother has diseases such as heart defects, diabetes or liver dysfunction, or if the foetus is too big or in a breech position. Then we operate. It can happen that a woman decides to have a caesarean section without any indication. At the same time, there are patients who insist on a natural delivery at the age of 45. I support every decision.

They say that the caesarean sections at your centre are unique. Do you use special methods?

We do. One example is the Misgav Ladach method, which allows the surgeon to cut through a smaller volume of tissue but requires more manipulation. We only introduced the method a few years ago, but we are now seeing the excellent results it brings.

The operation takes 20-30 minutes and the blood loss is comparable to that of a natural delivery. It is even preferable from this point of view. The patient stays in hospital for 5-6 days. She can leave the bed already on the first day.

We provide quality care for mother and child and the likelihood of infection is minimal. That is why famous women and wives of celebrities come to us from England, Monaco and other countries, countries with their own luxury medical services.

Recently, our centre was the basis for the medical paper "Patient satisfaction level in low-trauma caesarean section". According to the results of the study, over 90% of patients were satisfied with the outcome. We are planning a series of scientific publications based on this research.

A caesarean section is usually offered in case of complications. For example, a breech birth is a common problem. Some specialists recommend mechanically changing the position of the foetus, others categorically reject this.

A breech birth is always a risk, so I recommend a caesarean section. It is possible to deliver a baby in breech, but it depends on many factors: the weight of the woman, the weight of the baby and the details of its position. But even if all the conditions are in favour of a natural delivery, we operate in 90% of the cases, because a caesarean section allows the woman to deliver a healthy baby without birth trauma, vacuum or hypoxia.

As for changing the position of the baby, this is practised in some hospitals, but it is forbidden in ours: In this procedure, the position of the placenta is changed along with the foetus. This can be extremely dangerous.

There are patients who insist on natural childbirth at the age of 45. I support every decision.
